“There are lots of churches and lots of bars, but nowhere you can go that you don’t get drunk or preached at.

“People walk in and they say they feel the Holy Spirit and what they see is a changing Kingdom,” say founder John Stanley. They started the cafe after he realized that another form of church that looked like every other church was not what the community needed. On Saturday nights the church hosts church on the margins, a place where all in the community are invited to sit around a big family meal “with God sitting at the head as ‘dad’.”

Here’s how they describe themselves:

Uncommon Grounds Café is run by Evangelists and volunteers. We reach the least, the last and the lost with the gospel of Christ through listening and offering dignity. We are a space for Churches to learn and practice the Great Commission through volunteering, work missions, and training. We are a space for transition from isolation to community. If you enjoy good food, excellent coffee and you would like to “make a difference in the world” we have a place for you.
